Win passes to the Mile 22 advance screening in Atlanta

I’ve been looking forward to seeing Mile 22 since the casting of Iko Uwais as announced. For action film aficionados 2011’s The Raid was a blast of fresh, manic, violent air from Indonesia. Think Die Hard in a building, full of hyper violent drug dealers and gangsters, with an elite SWAT team trapped on the seventh floor. Iko Uwais was the star of The Raid and made that film an action classic and a truly great film, even if you don’t like action-assuming you could stomach the violence.

When watching Uwais perform silat, an Indonesian traditional martial arts one will be reminded of early Jackie Chan film, but without any hint of humor. His brand of martial arts is quick movements, lots of knife play and guns if he needs them. Mile 22 looks like Fury Road, but set in a populated urban environment with ten times the amount of bad guys who are intent on stopping Uwais’ character from turning in key evidence. Can you tell we’re excited about this film and have our expectations set just slightly high?

From the trailer, Mile 22 captures the spirit of Mad Max and The Raid, but also has a nice supporting cast to provide more depth and a slightly larger budget to provide a bigger canvas.

Mile 22 also stars Mark Wahlberg as James Silva, a mysterious, elite American intelligence officer who is in a foreign country. Lauren Cohan, Ronda Rousey and John Malkovich among others are also in the cast that has more of an ensemble feel than Uwais’ other work. If anything, Mile 22 looks like a spiritual brother to The Raid 2, which was a brilliant, creative and brutal action film that was released three years after the first on.

Mile 22 is directed by Peter Berg, who has worked with Wahlberg on other taut action movies or thrillers like Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor. This advance screening happens Wednesday night, August 15 in Atlanta. Winners will be drawn Monday, August 13 at 9PM.
