We’re part of the Stream Team for Netflix and were compensated for this post. Type in a holiday, any holiday into the search box in Netflix and you’ll find buckets of options for whichever festive occasion you’re in the mood for. Christmas is no exception and there are dozens upon dozens of movies, programs and specials that’ll get you in that holiday spirit, regardless of your age. Here’s a quick rundown of eight programs that’ll suit those from young children to older viewers.
For Everyone
Fireplace For Your Home
Technically, this isn’t a show, but it is very entertaining-in a relaxing way. Listen the sounds of a roaring fireplace; see the embers fly away from the burning wood up the chimney. You’ll all but swear that the television is on fire, but it’s not. This is great ambience if you’re in Miami or Montana.
Stick Man
Stick Man is based on the book by Julia Robinson, who also wrote The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child. Those later two are classics in our house and Stick Man is cut from the same cloth. In this story a stick is carried far away from his family and he’s trying to get home in time for the holidays. The fabulous, timeless animation that made Gruffalo such a warm-hearted delight is present here. Likewise, the stellar voice over cast which includes Hugh Bonneville, Martin Freeman, Jennifer Saunders and others are present. Anyone 4 and up will enjoy this 27 minute slice of heaven.
For the young kids
Thomas & Friends, Santa’s Little Engine
Thomas & Friends, Santa’s Little Engine is just for the kids. Specifically, those kids 2-4 years old and when they like Thomas, they really, really like him. There’s another Thomas Christmas special on Netflix too if you have a child who is this age.
For elementary age
Kung Fu Panda Holiday
From 2010 this 27 minute treat is great for those that like their pandas friendly and hungry, with a side of kung fu. Po is goofy, lovable and all wrapped up in holiday hijinks in this special that will entertain kids 5 and up.
Power Rangers Samurai
Even Power Rangers need a hand on Christmas Eve. The team reflects back on the past year and they receive a lesson in the true holiday spirit, with ninja kicks and monsters to appeal to kids that like that stuff.
For mom
12 Dates of Christmas
12 Dates of Christmas is like Groundhog Day, but set on Christmas Eve and has one girl repeat a date over and over. Your wife is probably already watching this in the other room. It originally aired in 2011 on FreeForm (Disney Family) and there are lots of Christmas films in this vein if this is your cup of good looking, feel-good, rom-com tea….we’re in.
For dad (or mom)
El Camino Christmas
Tim Allen, Dax Shepard, Kurtwood Smith, Jessica Alba and more round out this great cast in an original Netflix movie. It’s a rural gas station robbery gone wrong, with dry humor, puns, comedy and action in this Christmas Eve gone awry.
Trailer Park Boys: XMAS Special
One of Canada’s highest rated cable series goes back to 2004 for mature viewing, raunchy laughs. This is cult comedy with adult situations and language, but can be quite funny if you’re in that mood.
