Press Start! Game Over, Super Rabbit Boy is early elementary gold

Do you have a child in elementary school? If you do, look for the Scholastic flier that teachers send home in the folders. Somewhere in that flier you’ll see Press Start! Game Over Super Rabbit Boy!, it’s an early chapter book that your child will want to read over and over.

The text is such that a first grade reader should be able to get through it with no problem. Our 7 year old can easily read most of the book, only getting tripped up on a couple of words. It’s the content and packaging that really makes him repeatedly jump into the book and Press Start!, if you will.

Press Start! Game Over, Super Rabbit Boy! is a Branches book, which is an imprint of Scholastic. Branches concentrates on early chapter books that speak directly to the elementary school audience. Press Start!, Owl Diaries, Kung Pow Chicken and Haggis and Tank Unleashed are the books geared towards 5-7 year olds. Dragon Masters, The Notebook of Doom and Silver Pony Ranch are slightly longer and aimed at students who are 6-8. Each Branches book is jammed with color, has cool illustrations and moves at a very brisk pace.

Game Over, Super Rabbit Boy virtually explodes with color. If this were an 80’s cliché it would have shoulder pads, smell like strawberry bubblegum, wear vans, live in the valley and some dude who needs a haircut yelling “sweep the leg”!. The colors and action are a young reader assault on the senses-and they will love every page of it.

The story is about a young boy playing a video game called Super Rabbit Boy.  It’s also about the adventures that Super Rabbit Boy has within the game. By the end of the book our video game player learns a lesson or two and Super Rabbit Boy does too. Let’s just hope that the boy’s sister doesn’t Press Start to send Super Rabbit Boy into a brand new game.

The book’s size is compact and easy for kids to hold. Its price is a virtual steal at only $4.99, $4 if you order it through your child’s Scholastic flier that we were talking about earlier. At 72 pages this is a great value for the money, especially considering that your kids will love reading it, looking at the pictures and will take it from place to place. The second book in this series, Super Rabbit Boy Powers Up is released in April 2017.
