Tales of Sasha is first grade early chapter books girls will love

Our oldest is a first grade reader now and it’s a great time for him. He glows when he’s able to read early chapter books on his own with little to no assistance. From time to time he’ll still jump into a really fun picture book and last weekend we even caught him reading one to his younger brother. It’s when he reads to himself-or in his head as he calls it, that he really shines. Tales of Sasha are a series of early chapter books from Little Bee Books that are tailor made for first through third grade young readers.

From its presentation Tales of Sasha will immediately draw in young girl readers. The title is embossed, with sparkles and there are also sparkles on the flowers. Tales of Sasha is compact, not much bigger than your hand, has great illustrations and only costs $5.99 retail.  There are seven chapters with each one being approximately seven pages long including illustrations.

That chapter length in this sized book is perfect for the attention span of a seven year old. They’re short enough for them to read through them without abandoning a chapter halfway through it and that gives them confidence to keep reading.

Tales of Sasha is all about a friendship, being a friend and growing up. Her friends are changing, some are developing darker coats, others are getting bigger, but she is staying the same. Sasha is a fast horse, faster than all of her friends and able to jump farther than any of them too. She feels most alive when she’s running, loves to explore, push boundaries and when she’s doing that the parameters of her life start to really change.

It all starts when the gray spot on her back starts to sparkle one day. From there we learn that she is not like other horses and that her parents have known this since her birth.

Some boys will seek out Tales of Sasha and want to read it. However, for the most part these books will be the ones that your first through third grade girls will be talking about. Sasha is just a girl horse, playing, making friends, working hard and discovering life. They’ll root for Sasha to find her wings and discover who she really is. Parents will like for their kids to read these books because they’re utterly, completely positive. There isn’t a villain per se, just the reluctance of Sasha to face her fears, overcome adversity and do the best that she can. Adults will also appreciate that while Little Sasha is geared towards girls, it’s not entirely princess oriented.

Tales of Sasha: The Big Secret is the first book in the series and Tales of Sasha: Journey Beyond the Trees is the second book. There is a chapter snippet at the end of each book that previews the next book in the series. They’re written by Alexa Pearl and illustrated by Paco Sordo.
