Hey, we’re part of the #StreamTeam on Netflix and were compensated for this-all thoughts are our own. We write lots of posts about comic books-have you noticed that? Another thing that we really love, as well as our children, is some quality television. We’ve been streaming our TV for almost five years now and it is fabulous. Let’s take a look at some of the shows on Netflix that have their roots in comic books. To be fair, it is a list much larger than those that we found, but these are some of the better ones, in addition to a couple that might fly below your radar.
Trollhunters
This show was just added in January 2017 and is from a graphic novel from Guillermo Del Toro. It’s also one of the best shows you’ll see on Netflix. The animation is the same quality that you’ll see in movie theaters, complete with a great story and superb pacing throughout its 20 something episodes. Go ahead and green light this series for a second season already, please?
Lalaloopsy
Lalaloopsy, this one’s for the girls who are aged 5 and younger. Technically they have young reader books that are geared for that same demographic though. This is a show that your pre-k girls know and love as a gang of loveable dolls explore friendship and life.
My Little Pony
Similar to the above, but is a bit more classic. Equestria calls and (mainly) girls from 3-7 heed the call. Twinkle Sparkle and many other magical horses, some with wings and others being multi-colored help teach kids about life, sharing and the joys of being happy.
Voltron
Stop us if you’ve heard this one. Five friends combine their powers to form a massive robot to form the mega-powerful Voltron. Sure it sounds similar to another franchise, but this one is mega-family friendly. Ages 5-7 will completely go gaga over the action that Voltron delivers. Like its comic book brother, it’s also incredibly smart, with the team using their brains as much, if not more than their brawn.
Digimon
Did you know that your manga section at your local library is one of the most popular sections in the entire building? It is and it’s very likely that a Digimon manga (in English!) is there somewhere. The classic and updated version of Digimon is available on Netflix. Both of them offer action, team work and science fiction fun for ages 5 and up.
The Deep
This is not the Nick Nolte version, which is a good thing-unless you’re Nick Nolte. The Deep started out as a comic book, which is also great. This show tracks the Nektons as they explore living undersea and being a family. The animation in the show is OK and at times it feels a little drawn out but is still worth checking out for kids 5-7.
Luke Cage
The Defenders are cool. Luke Cage was OK, as was Daredevil and Jessica Jones was an afterthought in the comics On Netflix each show is for ages 17 and up and have their own fans and detractors. We’re waiting on The Defenders, which was one of our jams back in the day.
A Christmas Special: Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir
This monthly comic book from Action Lab Comics looks very similar to this seasonal episode. It has very sharp animation and a slight anime vibe to it. This Miraculous Christmas special, as well as the comic, take place in Paris and will resonate with kids 7 and up.
