Who would have thought that my mind’s rolodex would have our visit to Monster Jam as one of the best family memories of the year? Prior to going to Monster Jam it wasn’t us for sure. However, if your family has ever been to Monster Jam it’s likely that you agree with us and have been counting down to when it comes back to your area.
Monster Jam consists of a race, as well as a freestyle competition with trucks on massive wheels jumping and even flipping themselves to the delight of tens of thousands of fans.
Our oldest nor I knew anything about Monster Jam before going. Granted the title and premise of the event is enough to tantalize the imagination of a six year old (and myself), but we weren’t expecting entertainment on such a huge scale.
To describe the atmosphere at a Monster Jam show as electric is almost an insult to Thomas Edison. It’s more akin to an organic nuclear slow leak that’s entirely safe and wires anyone who views it with manic self-contained abandon. Our normally reserved son was yelling, waving his arms and cheering for drivers who couldn’t see him to a truck that had just jumped 20’ high. We were high fiving, hugging and smiling from ear to ear at an event that we had almost didn’t attend.
The traffic
If you’re going to Monster Jam leave early as the traffic to the venue could be horrible. It took us three hours door to door; we missed the first half of the show and still had one of the best times of the year.
Hints for families
It’s loud. It is incredibly loud. Purchase some form of noise dampeners before you go to the stadium. They do sell some there, but they might sell out, especially if you arrive late.
Monster Jam is for everyone. There’s a family friendly pit party before the event that allows you to meet the drivers and get closer to the trucks. You may be thinking that your kids don’t like trucks, they don’t this or that-but they’ll absolutely like Monster Jam.
You may be thinking that because it’s an event with tens of thousands of people that your children will hear bad language or see things you don’t want them to? Monster Jam was the most family friendly mass audience event we attended in 2016. College or professional sports will have worse language from its fans than the folks we met at Monster Jam. And during the event you can’t hear anything but the conversation from the person next to you-and even then you have to get right next to them and say it in their ear.
January 14 is the final time that Monster Jam will be at the Georgia Dome. Look around and you can find all manner of group tickets that’ll discount the experience even more.
