The kids and I attended Six Flags Over Georgia Holiday In the Park last year for the first time. On the way home that night I phoned my wife and let her know that next year when we attend it would be a family trip. They install over 1,000,000 lights at Six Flags Over Georgia to transform it into Holiday in the Park, a winter carnival with thrill rides, bubble snow and a train ride to Santa.
Our oldest is braver than he was last year. Back then he simply shuddered at the sounds of the big roller coasters, wanted hot chocolate and looked at all of the lights. This year he still wanted hot chocolate and looked at the lights, but he also wanted to ride some of the rides. His first stop was the DC Super Friends.
Parents of a certain age will immediate have Wonder Twin flashbacks when their kids say that they want to go there. However, he was intent on making his own memories. His first stop was The Batcopters, it’s a true kid’s ride with bat helicopters that slowly go in a circle and can be maneuvered up and down. After that his ‘ride’ enthusiasm was primed and he ran towards The Joker Funhouse Coaster.
A friend of his at school had told him about The Joker and it’s apparently all the rage amongst first graders. It was a chilly night, so the line wasn’t too long and within 10 minutes we were boarding the ride. The Joker is a great kid’s first roller coaster. There is one big dip, a couple small hills and it’s interspersed with some nice straight a ways. He was a little scared at parts of the ride but ended it with his hands held high.
Afterwards we joined mom and his younger brother and simply walked around to look at the lights. The kids would wander off to look at something in the area and it was one of those rare moments where we were utterly relaxed. The kids were being kids, looking at one of the countless strands of lights, humming a Christmas carol and generally being silly.
It was their second Holiday In The Park and they loved it. They also got to take a train to see Santa Claus. After a quick trip on Santa’s lap they were eager to see more lights and ask about hot chocolate.
Holiday In The Park runs through January 4 and operates different hours due to the holidays. The lights, carol singers and costumed performers start at specific times too, so be sure to check the schedule.
