A downside to your children learning the alphabet is that you miss out on the really cool alphabet books that come out. A is for Angry, an animal and adjective alphabet book by Sandra Boynton is in that category. It features her iconic characters, like the hippo, mouse, turkey and more doing things with a corresponding letter.
This is a simple book, as any one that teaches the alphabet or elements of it should be. The difference in Boynton’s books and others is that the blank spaces, as well as, the emotions that her animals convey speak volumes. When I look at the snake, he looks sleepy. That cat sure is clean and the bear is bashfully hiding behind the big letter B.
A is for Angry is a hardback book with slightly thicker than average pages. They’ll still rip, but kids 4 and up will be able to thumb through the book without worrying about tearing them. Children 3 and under will certainly enjoy the book, but would be best served by having it read to them.
I know my A, B, C’s. However I still find myself browsing this book just to look at the illustrations. Her books are ones that I never group up with, but bring about the feeling of being a kid. Part of that is due to the fact that our children have had her books since birth.
If there’s a kid in your life that is 6 or younger this is a great book for them. It’ll teach some new adjectives, review (or teach) the alphabet and let kids have a fun time while reading. Parents can teach the phonetic sound for each letter for bonus early reading points too.
