The rule in our house is that there only a couple author’s books that we can get rid of. It’s not that we want to get rid of any books, but due to age, space or children’s interest it’s simply impossible to keep them all. Sandra Boynton is one of those authors whose books we can’t get rid of. Granted some of her board books have had to be recycled because the spine was compromised and the pages were chewed through. EEK! Halloween! is her latest board book and if our children were younger I would worry for its safety.
Between the chickens, cat and pig I feel like I know these characters. Boynton’s farm creations have been happily traipsing in board books for decades. Our family’s favorites are Barnyard Dance, closely followed by Fifteen Animals and Birthday Monsters! In EEK! Halloween! the rhyming simple words, glossy, sturdy board book elements are all here.
Our 5 years old likes to read it. He’s certainly old enough to read a non-board book, and does so the vast majority of the time. However, he still wanted to read this one. I wondered, did he want to read this because he recognizes the characters? He remembers the fun we had reading The Going to Bed Book and wanted to revisit those characters.
I don’t know. Even if you or your young one have never read a Sandra Boynton book before you’ll find yourself smiling whilst reading EEK! Halloween! In the end of the book children will be relieved to find out that it’s just the pig scaring the chickens. On the way to that point though they’ll be pretend scared as the chickens run from various costumed characters in a landscape of iambic pentameters.
This is comfort board book reading for the kindergarten set and younger. Boynton’s book are classic and will easily be saved for the next generation. Whether or not it’s for the grandparent’s library or a great donation to our local library is up to our children.
