There are a couple instances where I miss not having cable. One of those is for the sporting events and the other is for missing out on some of the children’s shows. Invader Zim is on Nickelodeon and issue #11 of the self titled comic is out now. We’ve read the past four issues of this series and it’s quickly becoming one of our go-to, can’t miss all age comic books.
Not having seen the show we were hesitant to jump into the Invader Zim comic book because we didn’t know anything about the plot. Don’t let that fact hold you back because on the first page you’re given an overview of who’s who in the Zim universe and it’s actually quite simple. Zim is the green guy, Gir is his robot and Dib is their nemesis. Zim is also quite inept and is trying to conquer the Earth, but failing in spectacular ways.
In issue #11 of Invader ZIm he’s trying to create a virus that will destroy all humans. Gir gets in the way and is kicked out of the house, where his tuna attracts a stray cat. Through an absurd chain of events Zim realizes that Dib is allergic to cats, which leads Zim to create a machine that will shoot pets at people in order to trigger their allergies.
The art in Invader Zim is big and fits into oversized fast moving panels that are fun to read. The vocabulary in the comic book is OK for a 6 year old read as is most of the content. As part of Invader Zim’s plan there is reference to a dead cat. However, it’s only referenced and readers don’t see any violence, unless you count hair balls or cartoonish violence of animals being shot through a cannon.
Without a doubt the comic is great for kids 8 and up. They’ll understand the humor, laugh at the absurd references and ask parents about getting Nickelodeon. Our 6 year old likes the comic book and understands the references with a little explanation from us. He hasn’t asked about getting cable, but I suspect that this is a show he’ll watch when he’s visiting a friend’s place.
Hey, glad your son is a fellow Zim fan. =) I grew up with the show and I’m loving the comics! Unfortunately, Zim was cancelled years ago and does NOT air on Nickelodeon any more. But all the episodes are on Hulu and Amazon Prime. I’d highly recommend it, although it was pretty creepy so you might want to watch it with your child.
Agh, bummer. The fact that we don’t have cable (and that I didn’t Google to see if the show was still running….) failed me on that. The comic is great though.
