Plants Vs. Zombies #12, the fun fungi clean up Zomboss and crew

I get I now. At a Scholastic book fair his past year I saw a Plants Vs. Zombies graphic novel for sale. It benefitted the school so I bought it and haven’t looked back. The ongoing monthly series of Plants Vs. Zombies #12 ends with this issue and is one of the go-to all age comic books that your child should be reading. The monthly series ends with this issue, now they’ll be publishing all new graphic novels with Zomboss, Nate, Patrice, Crazy Dave and everyone else.

Plants Vs. Zombies is published by Dark Horse Comics and it’s a bummer that the monthly series is ending because they only cost $2.99. However, the graphic novel that we picked up at the book fair was $6.99 for 3 issues, so that is still quite affordable.

Issue #12 is the conclusion of the Boom Boom Mushroom, an elusive mushroom that Nate and Patrice are pursuing underground.  They’re running from a large group of zombies with Twister their pet pig and a handful of plants -who are running on their own. Also in the cave is Crazy Dave, who unwillingly might have figured out a way for them to foil Zomboss’ plans.

We learn why Boom Boom Mushroom is called that when Nate and Patrice find it, but are promptly cornered by a group of large zombies. What I really like about Plants Vs. Zombies is the detail in the artwork. The panels are standard size, but are jammed with so much vivid detail that it really propels the story forward. I also enjoyed the droll, sarcastic wit that’s written into some of the dialogue.

At the end of the day this is an all age comic book. However, it’s so entertaining that it can easily be enjoyed by almost any age. For example, our 6 year old likes the comic and can read most of the words, but can’t grasp some of the humor. Our 4 year old thinks that the drawing of Zomboss are funny, but he’s too young to sit through us reading the comic book to him.

Ages 8 and up will be able to read all of the story, as well as, understand the humor. For example when the zombies accidentally go to the surface (instead of the surface being lowered to them) they’re forced to shuffle away. 8 year old kids will be able to realize that a slow walking zombie shuffling their feet in order to get away from the heard of bulls is funny, in a dry, observational way. Think of some of the humor as a gateway to Monty Python. And wouldn’t the world would be a better place if we all thought just a bit more like Eric Idle?
