For young readers who are looking for a low impact, non committal, fun way to read all age comics the mini-series is your best bet. Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors: Contest of Champions #1 is the start of a mini-series that’s modeled after Marvel series that airs on Disney XD. This is still Spider-Man, but it’s the all age version that is easily approachable to younger readers, say ages 5 and up.
In this mini-series our web-warrior is minding his own business (as he usually is), when he’s tricked by Scourge, Abomination and Beetle to a meeting. A brief battle ensues when Spidey swings around the city and slams into a massive force field that someone has placed the entire city. He’s quickly teleported to The Collector’s Ship where he learns that a sibling game is going on between him and his brother called the Contest of Champions.
It’s a game of heroes and villains where The Collector and his brother call upon various villains and super heroes to battle each other with the fate of the world at stake. The Collector summons Hulk, Iron Man and Spidey, while his brother enlists Kraven The Hunter, Molten Man and The King of The Wendigos.
Some of the heroes are quickly eliminated leaving Spider-Man to take on all three by himself. Does he manage to defeat Kraven and his friends? What the heck is a Wendingo? I won’t spoil the end of the comic for the benefit of the younger readers who are here, but suffice it to say that there is a second issue in the Contest of Champions.
Our 6 year old loves this comic because he can read most of the words in the book. From a content point of view, parents will like it because it has no advertisement in the comic, except for one that promotes the Marvel comics from Disney XD like Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and the comic Avengers Assemble. The main story is broken up, but it’s done so with a couple connect-the-dots and word search puzzles.
What, draw and write in your comic book? Sacrilege you say, but for the all age comics you throw those rules out the window. Bonus for Ultimate Spider-Man Web-Warriors Contest of Champions is that it’s only $2.99. It’s a price point that allows kids to treat their comic books the way a well read comic book will end up. The pages will be dog eared, marked up, maybe cut out and 100% enjoyed thoroughly.
This series is by no means a classic, but your 6 year old that likes superhero stories will love it. Jump onto the single issues or collect the trade paperback once all of the issues are out.
