Our 4 year old is our crafty kid. Our 6 year old is our puzzle kid. Obviously, their roles are not set in stone, but by in large, that is what they prefer. As a parent, that’s why it was surprising to me that our oldest gravitated towards Paint By Sticker KIDS, a combination craft book that uses a little precision. This is a new book by Workman Publishing that lets kids create their own works of art using stickers.
The dad in me loved this idea because it’s 100% guaranteed mess-free. Even if they make a mistake the worst thing that could happen was that a sticker became attached to itself. After a very quick introduction our 6 year old was off and running with the book, loving every minute of it and quickly naming who each work of art would be a gift for.
Our ‘introduction’ was basically showing him the stickers, then the blank sheet and telling him that the fun part of the book was putting the stickers in the numbered slots to make a pretty picture. After that :10 chat I didn’t see him again for 30 minutes. After that period of time he showed me the creation he made and then asked what the most difficult one was.
I guessed that it was a Stegosaurus and gave him the stickers for his numbered creation.
For him this is a perfect activity. We could use it as a reward, a way for him to collect his thoughts, relaxation time or anything. He absolutely loved Paint By Sticker KIDS so much so that he almost gave this to a friend as a birthday gift. For the record, it was some Monster Trucks that narrowly beat the book out. However, the book only lists for $10 and creates 10 stickered pictures on thicker than average paper. It’s a great value for the money and if you look online you can probably find it for $8 or less.
All of the pages were perforated so that the stickers or the works of art could be torn out by an adult with ease. The stickers also create a 3-D effect, so that even if they aren’t put into the lines that thoroughly it appears that the object is jumping off the page. The art in what is the final project is surprisingly pretty and makes you do a double take to absorb everything that’s happening.
Within two days he did all ten sticker paintings, loved doing all of them and asked when the next book was coming out. I’m not going to rename him our crafty kid, but he sure loved doing this book.
Initially we gave it to the 4 year old, but he was just a big too young. The masters of Paint By Sticker KIDS can jump into Paint By Sticker Zoo Animals or Paint By Sticker, that is intended for adults. Those puzzles are as challenging as the ones in this book or even more so.
