It’s been four years since the Sugar Free Allstars put out their last release. Four years is an eternity in music, in kindie music that’s four generations, an even longer time. The video for Monster Truck, their first single in four generations (if you’re a child) just came out and it’s all things funk with a side of yacht rock that will hook kids and parents alike.
Monster Truck is a great example of the music on their next, self titled album. A. We love monster trucks, we just saw the show the other week so this song is a natural for our oldest to enjoy now that he can relate to it also. We like the song because it grooves, has a couple shifts that made us smile, a couple nice nods to yacht rock and the keyboards remind us of classic Deep Purple. It’s Space Trucking, albeit in a monster truck with lyrics that are squarely aimed at children and your funny bone.
Their new album comes out on April 2 and is on the funky, funny side of kindie. We’ll be reviewing it in a couple of weeks, but if you’re a parent who grew up on Parliament, soft 70’s rock, Dixieland, AC/DC, Schoolhouse Rock, Maroon 5 and more this is a release that you’ll want to get your ears friendly with. It has all of the best of elements that make up good kindie.
First and foremost, the music is tight and will appeal to any age. Younger listeners won’t know the influences, but that doesn’t matter, they’ll still groove along in the backseat. The parents listening (or driving the car) will enjoy the complex arrangements and laugh at the jokes in the lyrics. It’s music that the entire family will enjoy listening to-and that’s the point of well done kindie.
