Happy #NCBD ! New comic book day is yielding some new all age comics for everyone. This is the list that highlights the new all age comics that are released in a given week. All of these comics are OK for all ages, but some ages won’t enjoy them. Case in point are the new Princeless comics this week. Princeless Raven Pirate Princess and Princeless Be Yourself don’t have anything objectionable in them and have fabulous role models, but their realistic style might not be something that a five-year old wants to see.
It’s not that all ages comic books have to have an anime look about it with all of the characters having soft, rounded features. It’s the content that makes up something that’s OK for any age. A great example of this is a conversation with a seven-year old I had recently. I gave him a stack of our son’s all ages comics and some of our graphic novels. He looked at our graphic novels and wanted to see the action and superheroes that his friends like, but asked if there was blood. “Yes”, I told him. An all age comic book isn’t about lack of story or young elements, it’s about content and what is appropriate for kids.
The Doctor Who comic book is like that. There isn’t anything overtly not for children, no violence to speak of, but it’s more complex than an all age comic. It’s because of the advanced story line that we don’t include it here, despite the fact that I personally read it.
On with the comics this week. I learned that there are many all age DC superhero stories like Superman, Batman and more, they’re just done in book form from Captsone. Witness the Batman Choose Your Ending book that’s great for young readers. Jeremy Whitley has his fingerprints on three books this week, Princeless Be Yourself, Princeless Raven Pirate and My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror #21 comes out and this annual tradition is a hoot. It’s Springfield and the characters you love, monsterfied, zombies, undead, aliens and more-with a comic twist.
Lumberjanes is a great series for anyone. Pick up one issue and you’ll understand why it’s been opted for a movie and has legions of fans.
The one curve ball this week, that really isn’t an all age comic book is Age of Reptiles from Dark Horse. It’s got bloody dinosaurs doing what they did back in the day, but the art is amazing. Plus it’s all done with no words, because dinos can’t talk. If you’ve got a child who is 10 or older and into ancient reptiles and stunning art this is for them.
