What do you get when one of the best parts of a movie gets their own film? The quick answer is Minions, those cute yellow eraser shaped things from Despicable Me.  They were cute, strange and provided a nice ally to Gru’s good-bad guy.  In Minions we get 90 minutes of all Minions, all the time and children will enjoy at least 70 minutes of it.

It’s the first 20 minutes that children might squirm. “Has the movie started”, our five year old kept asking. He said that a couple of time and I reassured him that it had started, but the film was just a bit slow.

It starts out with Minions through history, looking for the most evil leader so that they can follow them. All of that eventually leads them to New York City where they have some nice sight gags that adults have most likely seen in the trailer. The Minions leave the city where they hitch a ride with a family that turns out to be evil, or at least a bunch or robbers.

It was about here that our oldest started to relax, stop asking about the film and start enjoying it. And he really did enjoy it, there were several belly laughs and he was grinning the entire time when I looked over. His three year old brother was a bit less content, but said that he enjoyed it afterwards. He even learned to say “Minions”, so it registered with him to some degree.

The family and the Minions go to Orlando for Villain Con. Again there are lots of low hanging joke fruit in regards to what the Minions actually do; other evil sight gags and we meet Scarlett Overkill. She’s the big baddie who is looking for a couple helpers.

Minions is a movie for children. There are some children’s movies that adults can enjoy as much as the kids, but this is not one of them. Adults will find it slow, familiar and at times annoying. Their children, however, will love it. They will love the way that the Minions speak in a hybrid of Spanish/French/English and the physical comedy that is everywhere in the film.  It’s a family film where the parents get the short stick and sometimes that’s the price of having children and going to something that you know they’ll enjoy.
