We’re on the Netflix StreamTeam and were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own and this list is quite awesome in our opinion. The first weekend of July is nigh and with it comes a longer than usual 4th of July celebration for us in the United States. If the weather is bad or if you simply need a break from the sun, heat, annoying relatives or fireworks here’s a list of 10 of the most American movies or programs on Netflix now.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
Chris Pine excels in almost every role he takes on. His turn at Jack Ryan didn’t produce the box office numbers they that thought it would, but it’s entertaining, patriotic and makes you want a sequel.
America: The Story of Us
From the History Channel, a look back at the 200+ years of the United States, how the landscape changed and everything that she’s produced.
Aerial America: Season 1
From the Smithsonian Channel it’s a view of the United States from above. Season 1 features ten states and each one serves as a tourist guide to make you want to visit them as soon as possible.
Wet Hot American Summer
You don’t need to have seen any of the 70’s or early 80’s films devoted to summer camp to enjoy 2001’s Wet Hot American Summer. Its sequel, that takes place on the first day of summer camp hit Netflix on July 31.
Team America: World Police
If only more movies were less PC….Team America: World Police is a foul mouthed film that takes on every cliché in government and film and ends up making a fabulous movie in the process, with puppets nonetheless. It’s unrated for bad language, violence and sexual situations, all of which featuring puppets.
Top Gun
80’s chase montage, check. Great soundcheck, check. Romance, oh Kelly McGillis yes. American pride, you betcha. Make a sequel already Maverick.
Grease
50’s music throwback, groovy. Great soundcheck, dig it. Disposable summer romace, yes. It’s Americana with cars, leather, music and dancing.
Sharknado
What other country could put sharks in a tornado and make it reasonably entertaining? Granted Norway came close to Sharknados camp factor with Dead Snow, which was great in its own right. But the cast, sharks, horrible dialogue and utter cheese make this a summer guilty pleasure.
Can’t Stop The Music
This is timely because it stars a young pre-op Caitlin Jenner, the always dependable Steve Guttenberg, the Village People and enough camp to put every 9 year old away for one week each summer. The dialogue is laced with sexual innuendo, the dancing is disco and you’ll be hooked from the opening scene. Once you see the trailer, you can’t unsee it and will simply have to watch it on Netflix.
Forrest Gump
If there weren’t one Tom Hanks film then the list would not be complete. For its time, Forrest Gump was ahead of the pack in special effects and they used them in a sublime way too. Fun fact: Gary Sinese still has both of his legs!
That’s our top 10 and I know that we could’ve had a top 20 list. What’s on your short list for movies that say United States or ‘Merica?
