The kids watch what dad watched on Netflix #StreamTeam

This was a compensated post, all thoughts and TV recommendations are our own. Our children are 5 and 3; while they can watch some PG things on television it’s kept G for the most part. I look forward to when they can watch the classics that I grew up with. Certainly there will be some new classics that they enjoy, but I want to see how they like what I liked as a child. That, plus it gives me an excuse to watch them again…for the purpose of family bonding.

The kids watch what dad watched on Netflix StreamTeam

Netflix did a survey of worldwide dads, what they watch and other television habits. The common denominator is that dads look forward to watching superhero shows. In other news: bacon is tasty.

The cultural differences are interesting. Dads in the U.S. like Inspector Gadget (which has new episodes streaming now), in the U.K. they dig Danger Mouse, Mexican dads like the Pink Panther and no dad anywhere likes Calliou. While I had initially forgotten about Danger Mouse, I saw the trailer, remembered it and can easily see our kids loving this show too.

Families can find these and other shows on Netflix. Some of the shows on that list that we’ve already shared with our kids are Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Star Wars The Clone Wars, Garfield and Friends, Casper’s Scare School, The Magic School Bus and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. Actually, all of them except for the last two were found by the children, so kudos to them on their great taste.

It was even more rewarding when they actually laughed at and enjoyed my two recommendations. You can dig through the entire list yourself and see what shows you’ll be mutually enjoying with your kids this weekend.

If your kids are older and can easily sit through movies here’s a collection that I love on Netflix right now.

Escape From Witch Mountain

This is the original from 1975 and is the story of two orphans with superpowers. It was my jam back then and still holds up nicely for kids 7-12.

Galaxy Quest

This movie just gets better and would be great for kids 7 and up. It’s got enough action for the kids and is family friendly, packed with genuine laughs and great casting. If the kids who are that age haven’t seen this gem from 1999 yet do so ASAP.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

What a classic this show is. It is one of the few shows that increased dramatically in quality as it went on. The writing, casting, jokes and plot worked the way that few shows or feature films do. It’s good for 8 and up.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

I still listen to this soundtrack a couple of times a year and then ramp it up during Halloween season. It’s one of the best films ever, and this is coming from a guy that cannot stand musicals.

Big Trouble in Little China

Go ahead a remake it, we’ll probably go see it, but will always put this version first. Kurt Russell in one of John Carpenter’s best films, you’ll come for the action, stay for the comedy and enjoy every second of it if you’re 7 or older.
