Your five year old son is requesting a My Little Pony comic book. Don’t panic. It’s OK. He’s five and if he wants to read, then having material that he wants to read are key towards making that happen. Plus, My Little Pony is a fine all ages comic book that has lots to love for boys and girls.
Let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room. Reading a My Little Pony comic doesn’t mean that you son is gay, weird, or not going to love the Avengers soon. And even if your son is any of those things you’ll still love them, guide them to adulthood and instill upon them the values of quality, independent comic books.
The second misconception or worry about My Little Pony for some parents of boys that want to read the comic is that there aren’t any guys to model themselves after. Well, there aren’t many aspects of My Little Pony that are actively marketed towards boys, but that’s OK. Look at the aspects of the dozens of other comics that aren’t marketed towards girls and nobody is worrying about them.
In issue #17 of My Little Pony: Friends Forever Twilight finds herself stressing out about not disappointing anyone or letting them down. She takes a trip to help herself, but ends up realizing that the only way to help herself is to genuinely help others.
Kids will love the bright and vibrant colors in the issue. It has more colors than an issue of The Simpsons, which heretofore, was the most colorful monthly comic we’ve seen. The stock that the pages are printed is thicker than other comics and simply feels like a better book. It seems to be printed on the same quality paper as The Simpsons, which is thicker, glossier and feels great.
There are lots of laughs, silliness and all round pony action in the comic. Don’t worry about getting My Little Pony if your boy is asking for it. A father friend of ours recently went to BronyCon with his 8 year old son. It’s OK. Our 5 year old wants to read it because it’s a colorful, fun comic for him to look at. He’ll be able to read some of the words and is packed with animals that can fly, do magic and more. What’s not for a kid to love?
