Before now one of the major voids in comic books was Walt Disney. How can a company that has created dozens upon dozens of classic characters not consistently produce comic books? That question has been answered with IDW now printing Disney Comics. It all starts with Uncle Scrooge #1 (405) and will continue with Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories.
Uncle Scrooge starts off with its classic numbering system, so if you were waiting for the issue after 404, then you can wait no longer. That’s a clever and sublime way to acknowledge the old school fans. We know that the first issue of any series won’t be more valuable than others, but realize that new readers need to feel welcomed into the fold. Re-starting the series, eliminating worlds or other plot devices might be overused, but are a necessity in the comic world.
The stories in Uncle Scrooge are all new. It’s necessary to say that because they have an old school feel to them. The panels are all square or rectangular and they could easily have taken place in any time period in the past 70 years.
Uncle Scrooge is still worried about people taking his money. He still loves his nephews, even though they get into trouble and sometimes do the wrong things. Donald is still in the picture, egging on his brother as they fight robots and look for riches.
The comic consists of three stories and is a thick all ages comic book. At $3.99 I was initially put off by its cost, but it’s much thicker than other comics that have the same price point and will entertain young readers for hours. Plus it’s Walt Disney.
It’s a comic brand name that defies time and is trusted without a second glance to parents all over the world. Welcome back to the all age comic scene Disney and thanks to IDW for getting you there.
