The new monthly all age comic book Guardians of the Galaxy is a pleasant surprise. For starters, I didn’t see anything about it advertised and secondly it’s a good all age introduction to what will most likely become the go-to super hero team for our five-year old.
It does make sense. There is a new animated Guardians of the Galaxy television show coming to Disney XD. The art from this comic is in line with the animation and art from Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H, which airs on the same channel. Between those two shows and Phineas and Ferb on Disney XD I wish that channel was available a la carte or as an option to stream.
But back to the new Guardians of the Galaxy all ages comic. It’s important to distinguish that this is all ages. Fans of the existing Guardians title, curious about the team up title or wanted to cash in on the all important (and most valuable!) first issue will be disappointed.
However, if you have a 6 year old who is curious about the Guardians this is great for them. The comic has two stores about the team. One of them is original to the comics, but most likely will run on the animated series.
It has the team crash landing on a strange planet where they meet some street kids. The kids are in a gun battle with some aliens who are threatening to burn down their orphanage. Gamora makes a promise to save the children and takes them back to the ship. Once on the ship the kids make a mess of the place, tie up Drax, steal Star Lords gun, trim Groot and frustrate Gamora to the point to where she throws them off of the ship. A quick glance to the kids on their planet and you realize that they were the ones in control of things when the Guardians landed there.
The second story is an origin of sorts with Peter Quill back on Earth just as he’s kidnapped by the Ravegers. Anyone who’s seen the movie knows how he ended up in space, but that’s what’s so great about an all ages Guardians of the Galaxy comic.
There are just a couple things in the T+ rated comic that make it too much for all ages. This comic is safe for ages 5 and up. Our oldest has been reading comics for a while and I hope that his love of books and reading continues. With action oriented titles like this it’s a great step in that direction. He can’t read most of the word in this by himself yet, but he can read some of them and loves looking at the art. As a bonus for parents, the comic is only $2.99, a great price point for kid comics that might be lost, bent, ripped and thoroughly used.
