Kicking it with King Julian, Iron Monkey and more #StreamTeam

Hey, hey, we’re part of the #StreamTeam over at Netflix and were compensated for this post. All thoughts are our own.  I’ve never been too big on New Year’s Eve.   I’m even less of a fan now that I have a 3 and 5 year old alarm clock that wake us up every day at 6:30.  Netflix is helping parents on several fronts, one of them being a flexible New Years Eve countdown with Kind Julian and I’m highlighting some great things that you can stream now on Netflix.

Celebrate New Year's Eve anytime with King Julian on Netflix

First off let’s talk about the countdown that I, along with many other parents are unable to stay up to.  Our children want to be part of New Year’s Eve, they get the hype and want to see what’s happening.  Spoiler alert:  it’s OK to get to sleep before midnight kids.  Now you can stream an authentic child friendly New Year’s Eve countdown anytime.    Here’s the link.  Now go plan their new year party for 7PM so you can relax.

It’s hosted by King Julian, features some fine top 40-ish dance music and is entertaining for all ages.  King Julian is the lemur from Madagascar and he’s got his own show on Netflix, shocking called All Hail King Julian.  I was skeptical of the show because I thought that the animation and vocal actors wouldn’t measure up to what I’ve enjoyed from the movies.

Ring in the new year with King Julian on Netflix

Having seen all of the episodes I can say that they’re all very entertaining, have very good animation and has some of the original voices from the movie.  This time King Julian is voiced by Danny Jacobs and there is no difference between his work and what was on the big screen.  Note to movie producers:  You don’t always need the ‘name’ voice over actors to make the part work.  Jacobs has a deep resume having done Phineas and Ferb, Futurama, Skylanders and Penguins of Madascar on the big screen as King Julian…I guess those producers got the note.

King Julian party

We had our own King Julian party and both boys loved it.   Julian’s shtick of bravado, mixed with the knowledge that he needs to be a great king, but content to be somewhat aloof is fun to watch.    The kids will start watching King Julian and you’ll be a willing accomplice to their enjoyment.

When the kids are asleep there are some awesome below radar movies that we love available to stream.   If you like action movies these are ones that you don’t want to miss.

Supercop is my favorite Jackie Chan movie.  The stunts in this film are amazing, all physical, no CGI, screen work or model mock ups.  This is stunt work 101 and the best example of big scale, dangerous things Chan ever did.  It also stars Michelle Yeoh who should’ve had action work after action work when people saw her in this film.  Granted it did lead to her being in one of the Bond films, but it restrained her prowess in that film; rather than unleashing it.

Project A2 is in our Jackie Chan top 10 because of the stunts.  You’ll sit through the stilted acting and marvel at the stunts.

Iron Monkey with Donnie Yen is great because of the story and the action.  His restraint and power are evident in how calm the character is throughout.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was a dud in theaters.  It earned just over 50 million and probably wasn’t enough to merit a sequel.  That is too bad because the movie is very good, Chris Pine is a great Jack Ryan and Kevin Costner is fabulous to see as a grizzled, but effective elder spy.   You won’t regret seeing this.

Snowpiercer is graphic, violent and very bloody.  It stars Chris Evans about the survivors of the apocalypse living on a moving train.  Everyone lives by their class status and the film is raw, pessimistic and unforgettable.  It’s also very good, as long as you don’t like things all sunshine and buttercups

Forces of Nature.  And if you like things all sunshine and buttercups there is Forces of Nature with Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck.  I kid, I’ve never seen it, but my wife loves this film and will most likely watch it this weekend, at which point I’ll sit on the sofa and dutifully join her.
