We received the toy for review purposes, all thought are ours. To say that our oldest boy loves farms is an understatement. When he was 2 he got his first play farm. When he was 3 he had three different farms and a metal farm with magnet figures. He’s 5 now, has farm puzzles, albeit with the rogue dinosaur on them and vehicles of all sort. The John Deere Gear Force Harvest Action Combine will be the next piece of his farm domination.
It’s important to state that he’s into his vehicles now because the John Deere Gear Force Harvest Action Combine is a vehicle. This is almost as big as his fire engine, has more lights and sounds than any moving thing he owns and actually does a job. He’s still interested in pretend play obviously, but at his age now the toy helps to actually do something.
This is a real combine, except at a much smaller scale. Just put the toy bales of hay that come with the set and have the combine roll over them. Once the reel puts the hay into the separator it’s stored until you press the yellow button on top. You get bonus points if you press one of the four buttons on the combine that either turn on the lights or one that says something.
The Harvest Action Combine comes with two worker figures, a dog, three tools for the workers and a bull to intimidate the other animals.
This is a well made toy with lots of detail and has the potential to entertain kids for hours on end. There are a couple different vehicles in the Gear Force series including the Forestry Adventure set, Heavy Hauling Crawler, Gator Cowboy set and others. They’ll vary in price and the Harvest Action Combine retails for $49.
Hint: to make the combine work as well as it should use the vehicle on a flat, hard surface. We tried it on carpet and the vehicle did not pick up the bales of hay. We took it to a stone floor, tried it again and our little combine worked like it was plowing the hay fields of our bathroom. It’s also important to say that it won’t spit out any toy. It will just pick up the little bales of hay that come with the combine.
Our 5 year old will love this and be able to work it, while it will frustrate his 3 year old brother. The younger one will really love to push the buttons and see the lights, but won’t be able to work the combine feature.
