Rare are the volunteering opportunities for children. Having worked in the non-profit sector for a number of years I know that there are various reasons for this. It is a special day when volunteer sessions; that are more than just busy work happen for families. However, on October 25 there are three family volunteering opportunities around the city in Fulton and DeKalb County.
All of them are with The Nature Conservancy. They’re teaming up with Trees Atlanta and Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve to improve the health of some of our trees. Volunteers will be planting grass, cleaning up parks, removing debris from waterways and more. The vast majority of these jobs are OK for children and this is a great opportunity for family volunteering in Atlanta.
They’re happening in three areas from 9-noon on Saturday, the 25th of October.
- Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, Lithonia: Volunteers will mulch trails and clean up a section of the South River shoreline.
- Veterans’ Medical Center, Decatur: Volunteers will plant trees and shrubs near the creek behind the Medical Center.
- English Avenue, Atlanta: Volunteers will team up with Trees Atlanta to plant a community forest, including fruit and nut trees.
Healthy forests make your life better every day. Trees clean the air we breathe and the water we drink. Our urban canopy offers shade and shelter, for us and wildlife. And our city’s wooded parks are the center of our communities, harboring our memories and our hopes.
Registration is simple over at The Nature Conservancy. Dress appropriately because it’ll be chilly in the morning.
This event is sponsored by CSX Transportation.
