Adventure Time: The Complete Fourth Season comes out on Blu-ray and DVD on October 7. We don’t have cable so I had never seen it prior to receiving the DVD. I was familiar with the name due to comic books, but was unfamiliar as to how large of a presence they have. However, just a look at the show makes me realize that this is something that I should like. I asked the neighborhood boys who are 7 and 10, if they liked Adventure Time. I was met with a resounding YES and they are not alone after watching it.
Adventure Time is the highest rated show for boys 6-11 and the second highest rated show for boys 6-14. It’s the number one show on Cartoon Network and is currently in its sixth season. I was familiar with the look of the show, but now that I’ve seen the actual show the comics are enjoyed more and the music elevates the show to a higher level.
Adventure Time is Finn, a human and Jake, his dog who has magical powers that allow him to shrink, grow or take any shape at any moment. They also have The Ice King, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen who sometimes join them. All of them live in the post apocalyptic world in the Land of Ooo.
Each episode is 11 minutes long, which is the perfect length for kids while you’re making dinner or just need a moment to get away. The problem with showing Adventure Time to your kids is that you’ll want to watch it too. OK, that’s not really a problem, the humor that you get from the show will sometimes be very different from what the children think is funny.
In that regards Adventure Time is like The Simpsons and The Muppets in that it’s a show that children and adults can enjoy for many of the same reasons.
When you first watch Adventure Time it’s immediately surreal, silly and very bright. Keep watching. There are lots of quality jokes for the adults that children won’t get and they won’t get offended by. All of the content in Adventure Time is OK for children. Some of it is very weird, but it’s not scary, objectionable or offensive.
There is original music in almost every episode and it’s worth listening to. The songs are funny, silly, add to the characters and sometimes evoke real, sincere feeling on a deep level.
The viewer may not always know what’s happening in Adventure Time, but it’s always enjoyable to watch. It’s not full-on, laugh out loud funny, but it provides us with a constant grin with occasional LOL moments. Your children probably know Adventure Time. This is one of those shows that is OK for parents to watch too. This is quality, thinking animation that works on many levels.
Adventure Time: The Complete Fourth Season arrives on Blu-ray DVD on October 7. It contains all 26 episodes, commentary and a special featurette on the music of Adventure Time.
