Skyward #9 concludes this story arc-still great all ages comic

When we took a look at Skyward #6 it was awesome.  The series was a fabulous tour de force all ages comic that captured the attention of parents and children.  The final arc of The Battle For Three Rivers ends in issue #9 of Skyward and it’s still very good, but left me wanting more.

Skyward 9 cover

Herod and his armies are about to storm Three Rivers, but he’s also added the assistance of some specters to make short work of things.  Quin, the Rabites, Prince Dominic and Mia team up to go under the city in hopes of intercepting them before they can defeat King Edrick.  If that sounds a bit cumbersome there is a nice recap page that breaks things down a bit more than I did here.

Skyward #9 is great all ages.  If I were a child I would have loved this issue and been camping out at the office of Jeremy Dale to start issue 10 now. For proof of how enthusiastic Skyward’s youth fans are just look at the letters from fans page, appropriately entitled Skywords.

There are drawings that some young readers send in, questions about the next issue and some really nice interaction from Jeremy Dale.

As an adult the story in Skyward #9 wrapped up too quickly and without satisfaction.  I know that there is a big reveal about Herod in issue #10, but that, along with the scaled down  battle was a let-down.   The title, Battle For Three Rivers seems epic in scale too.  While this issue wasn’t epic, it’s enough to keep young comic readers coming back to this fine all ages comic.

There is some nice humor that will appeal to all readers, mainly coming from Skerrigan.

Skyward 9

For us Skyward worked best when it was in the woods with the Rabites.  This issue has so many moving parts that nobody, except for Harod really gets a chance to shine.  However, even with this one issue not measuring up to previous ones it’s worth a read.  If nothing else it’ll introduce young readers to comics and get them to enjoy.  Plus, it’s all ages, so parents don’t have to worry about any bad content.

Fans of Jeremy Dale and Skyward can catch him in person at Dragon Con in Atlanta.
