We do love some building block sets. KRE-O has a bunch of new sets that are themed around Transformers. One of the new sets aimed at younger children is the Age of Extinction Grimlock Street Attack Set. It features Grimlock, a break-away Chinese gate, one gold knight Optimus Prime Kreon and two Vehicon Kreons.
Putting the set together for adults will take about an hour. However, this is one of the Transformers themed sets that has a younger age, thus allowing children to build and play. The Age of Extinction Grimlock set is appropriately geared to kids 6-12. Those younger kids will take about 2 hours with adult supervision to complete, while the older kids should be able to do it in just over an hour.
The instructions for the set are simple and easy to follow. We opened all of the little bags, separated the pieces by their colors and started building. One trick to doing these small piece construction sets with small children is to break it out into small, achievable goals.
A 6 year old may not have the patience to assemble the entire Grimlock Street Attack in one sitting. Our 5 year old doesn’t have the patience, but he likes to ‘play’ and assemble them. We have enough ziplock bags nearby so that we can quickly put all of the colored pieces in their own bags when his attention starts to wander.
Once you’ve assembled Grimlock he stays together quite well during play. His thigh pieces and shoulder guns popped off the easiest, but once you figure out how to correctly hold him those pieces stay on better.
What’s cool and different about the Age of Extinction Grimlock Street Attack is that Grimlock can actually attack-and have the Vehicon Kreons move into his mouth. The two Kreons have a magnet on their back. When you move Grimlock close to an unsuspecting Kreon he will get sucked up into his mouth, a little dinosaur snack, if you will.
The KRE-O Transformers Age of Extinction Grimlock set works with other major brands too. It retails for $19.99, so its price point is reasonable for an almost 200 piece set. The other thing that is unique and handy for parents about the KRE-O sets is that they’re packed in cardboard boxes that have a handle. It’s like a little Michael Keaton taking his KRE-O suit.
