The Ice Cream Expedition from National Geographic Kids in Atlanta, 8/20

It’s a cross county road trip with an old ice cream truck, three friends, eco conservation, film making and a dash of National Geographic Kids.  Three friends, Caleb Kruse, Cameron Kruse and Jordan Fatke purchased an old ice cream truck, retrofitted it to run on vegetable oil and are driving around the county this summer.  They’ll be giving away ice cream to children around the county, teaching them about conversation, having them sign a pledge and possibly eat some more ice cream-or maybe that’s me eating some.

Team by Truck Cropped #IceCreamExpedition

All of the ice cream for the trip was donated by Magnolia Tropical Ice Cream and has all sorts of tropical flavors including mango, guava, purple yam and coconut.  Yum, anyway you scoop it.

When they travel around the country they’ll be stopping at various museums, parks, aquariums or other places to talk to children and parents about ways to preserve nature and use less.

Ice Cream Expedition

The Ice Cream Expedition applied for a National Geographic Young Explorers Grant to help them make this a reality.  That application caught the attention of National Geographic Kids which helped them finance and promote the journey.  Additionally, the September 2014 issue of National Geographic Kids will feature a story about the #IceCreamExpedition.  In case you haven’t guessed, you can follow along on twitter using that hashtag.

On Wednesday, August 20, #IceCreamExpedition is landing in Atlanta at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.   The ice cream truck will be parked outside the Visitor Center from 11-noon.  It’s an ice cream truck, it’s big and there’s likely to be some children and at least one dad in line for ice cream.

After Atlanta the #IceCreamExpedition will travel to Nashville, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York NY and Boston.

You can stop by, learn a bit, take a pledge, teach the kids about conservation and get some nice ice cream on a super hot summer’s day.  What’s not to love?  Share the photos with their twitter feed, Instagram, Facebook or Vimeo
