The Guardians of the Galaxy are hot now. Super hot. We caught 17 minutes of the movie the other week and it is a new classic. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has been our favorite comic for the past year. They’re appearing in Silver Surfer this month and it only makes sense that Star Lord and Rocket Raccoon get their own comic.
We gave Rocket Raccoon a glance, but the art, combined with the soft “T” rating made us choose Star Lord. Some comic circles have said that Rocket Raccoon is an all ages title. I’m a big fan of all age titles, but realize that they don’t sell as well as others. Next month I’ll give Rocket Raccoon a read to see if it’s a “T” or slightly harder all ages.
Star Lord is rated “T” too, but in this case I immediately liked the art, which is more realistic than Rocket. The only objectionable things in Star Lord are a couple language instances, science fiction violence and one slightly sexually suggestive scene involving two alien women. Overall it’s no big deal, if this were a movie it’s be a run of the mill PG.
Star Lord #1 is good because it gives you a feel for Peter Quill’s personality. The young boy who was taken from Earth, raised wandering the galaxy as a seemingly rudderless good guy with a great heart, but rough on the edges.
It has enough action to keep things fresh and firmly plants his key weapons and tricks that’ll be seen in the movie. That’s not a bad thing because his blaster is one of the coolest movie props that I’ve seen in a while. We received Star Lords Quad Blaster from Hasbro and it is cool. It shoots Nerf bullets and has dual action, firing two bullets at once about 25 feet, but more on that later.
The down side to Star Lord #1 is that, if you’ve been watching the Guardians run up, it feels familiar. The Guardians of the Galaxy comic does not have that same feeling. It is entertaining enough to keep me in the loop, as a paying reader for the second issue. This one ends with Quill finding out that he has a sister.
Star Lord #1 came out on July 2 and the next issue comes out on August 6, just a couple days after the Guardians movie is release.
