The Mojo household is a virtual feast of activity during the day. From changing diapers to teaching our oldest to use the scooter, our outdoor activities run the gamut during the summer. It was no surprise that we were stumbling over each other to use the Northwest Territory 8 Person Instant Cabin Tent in the backyard.
My parents weren’t the camping type, though I did go to Boy Scout camp as a kid. I remember chopping wood all winter long so that my dad would get me a dome tent. They were new and I wanted to be one of the camping cool kids. I still remember the price of that tent, just south of $200. And that tent wasn’t even top of the line because the poles didn’t have the elastic that connected them. I had to connect them like a children’s game, which wasn’t cool since I was a rugged tween who wanted to rough it.
The Northwest Territory 8 Person Instant Tent is truth in many ways. Instant: the tent takes 5 minutes to fully put up. Fully put up meaning stakes in the ground and rain tarp on the tent. If you skimp and don’t us the rain tarp then it’ll take 3 minutes. You can put it up by yourself, but with another person it takes half the time. The poles are sewed inside the tent poles-all you have to do is pick up the middle, extend the roof poles and then extend the legs. That is it.
It’s also big enough for me to stand up in and comfortable enough for 8 adults to sleep in. My wife pointed out that the two windows on the side, dual windows on the front doors and mesh ceiling allowed for lots of wind to naturally cool the tent. #KmartSummerFun here we come.
Since our kids are 2 and 4 years old, the last time I remember camping was before we were married. Now that the kids are curious about camping we’re priming the pump and getting them curious about spending more time outside and going camping.
I was a little concerned, when we put the tent up with the 4 year old, that we weren’t actually going anywhere. I needn’t have worried. He was so enamored with the tent he could have been in the garage and it wouldn’t have mattered. We brought a whole bag of puzzles, snacks and other activities. The kids didn’t spend the entire time in the tent – our 2 year old was also interested in going in and out of it.
Regardless of how he enjoys it now, the tent is in a shady part of the yard where we can go and play in the shade. It’s close to the sandbox, which we’ll hopefully substitute for a small creek next year when we go camping. In our backyard daylight camping trip the other day we even heard the hawk that has his nest in our backyard. Getting outdoors does the soul good.
