Being a dad and running this site I encounter some cool products. Over the past month I’ve been making a list of them for various reasons. Some of the items in this Father’s Day gift guide were provided to me for review purposes and some I purchased. They’re all really cool things and item, items that I love and think that other dads would dig also.
Confessions of The World’s Best Father by Dave Engledow
Confessions of The World’s Best Father firmly has its tongue in cheek. It has photographs and two or three paragraph stories on each page about what’s going on in them. The photos show dad doing something silly, dangerous or aloof and each one is amazing. It’s not the dumb dad stereotype because it’s so well done and over the top you’ll marvel at how the photographs were done. Another reason that the book succeeds is that it tracks his daughter’s life over the period of a couple of years. This is a great toilet book or nighttime read when you want something just to make you smile.
SW4 London Gin
Because a nice gin drink is needed after a day with the kids. SW4 London Dry Gin is an award-winning British spirit that blends effortlessly with any juice in the house. It’s smooth and goes down with easy, your gin connoisseurs will love it and your friends that don’t like gin will change their minds once that taste this.
A nice throwback graphic T from Darring USA
If dad doesn’t have the original throwback vintage there are some really nice reproductions out there. This old school car shirt is from Darring USA. They’ve got a nice selection of generic old print t shirts that go back to the day.
A bow tie from Beau Ties
The name, Beau Ties is awesome. We don’t wear ties too often. However, when we do, we have it on good authority that our wife finds bow ties much sexier that other ties. Learning to tie them isn’t too difficult and the payoff is well worth it. Beau Ties are handmade in Vermont.
Samsung Galaxy Camera
We purchased the Samsung Galaxy Camera 9 months ago and it is amazing. It shoots high def video and has a 21X zoom with 16 mega pixels. It’s also just slightly bigger than a cell phone. Don’t kid yourself, the photo difference between your camera and higher quality DSL is huge. This little point and shoot is the bridge that allows you to take high quality photos wherever you go. As a bonus it wirelessly hooks up to my Dropbox when I get back home and has all of the apps like Twitter and Instagram that are needed for work.
Rum Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
From the moment you open the cork top of Rum Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva you know you’re in for something special. It’s a rum so smooth and tasty that you almost don’t want to mix it with anything. I’m not a mixologist, but every single rum drink I’ve made with it has been outstanding. It’s been aged for 12 years and has won countless awards. Taste it and you’ll see why.
Guardians of the Galaxy comic book
This is consistently our favorite comic book. It’s so much more than ‘a group like The Avengers in space.’ The art is great, story is very good and the characters are really outstanding. If you know a dad that used to be into comic books and might be into them again, this is a great book to get them back in the saddle.
Shine Fitness + Sleep Monitor by Misfit
What I like about the Shine is that you can get an overview of your physical activity just by tapping it. It also tells you the time and looks more like a traditional watch than a twizzler that’s wrapped around my wrist. Tap the Shine to your smart phone and you get an detailed picture of your sleep and physical activity. The actual benefit of this is that you remain active on a more consistent basis. I wasn’t really active today, I need to step it up, you’ll find yourself saying. A friend of mine jokingly calls hers the inactivity monitor, because she’s had to work lots lately. Either way, she’s aware of it and knows that she needs to get moving.
Mission Belt
I replace my belt as least twice a year and not because I keep growing and shrinking. It’s those holes in the belt that either keep breaking or becoming too large. At that point the belt is too ugly to use or simply doesn’t work anymore. The Mission Belt is a hole-less belt. No holes. It secures itself using a reverse, click lock system that is on the underside of the belt. Go ingenuity. They come in a variety of colors, start around $31 a belt and have free shipping on orders over $50. Plus they were seen on Shark Tank.
The Extinction Parade by Max Brooks
If dad is into zombies or vampires this graphic novel is for him. The Extinction Parade is written by Max Brooks who wrote the breakout comic World War Z. This is a bloody, graphic, book that is for ages 17 and up. It’s good zombie vs. vampire fights that’ll entertain him in print before he sees it on TV.
Oral-B Black 7000
The Oral-B Black 7000 is even better than its previous version which is great. This gives your teeth a just back from the dentist every single time you brush your teeth. There are multiple settings on the toothbrush, including a tongue cleaning setting which works after the first try.
Socks from K Bell
I only wear a tie a couple of times a year. However, I’ll wear dress socks twice a week. A cool, comfortable pair of dress socks-that have personality add flair to an otherwise standard business appearance. K Bell Socks has dozens of different prints of socks, from over the top zombies, aliens, monsters, animals and more. Surely Ted Rubin knows about K Bell Socks, right?
Shorts from Darring USA
I looked at the length of these shorts and didn’t even try them on. They’re ridiculously long and too trendy I thought. I obviously tried them on and immediately understood the deal. They are the most comfortable shorts I’ve ever worn. It’s ironic because it feels like I’m not wearing anything. Knee length shorts normally aren’t my thing, but the feel of these Darring USA shorts easily overcome my desire for shorter shorts. They breathe well, are lightweight and let air zip through with ease.
The Juniper Bonsai tree
We’ve had bonsai trees off and on for the past 20 years. They’re really relaxing to own and quite fun. But it’s just a plant you say? True, it is, but over time you get to watch how it grows, trim the branches and shape it accordingly. That ‘Zen’ feeling is kind of hokey stereotype, but they are calming and add a touch of distinction.
I don’t play pool. However, if I played pool I’d have a pool cue as cool as this.
