The Pirate Fairy is a movie that children, especially girls 3-10 will thoroughly enjoy. That is not to say that boys won’t like it, but they may start watching the movie thinking that it’s mainly a pirate movie. The pirates enter The Pirate Fairy 34 minutes into it and are there for the rest of it. However, make no mistake about it, this is a fairy movie akin to Secret of the Wings.
The Pirate Fairy is from the world of Peter Pan. Because of that, the pirates that you meet in the movie are recognizable, some more so than others. As the movie gets toward the end fans of Peter Pan are rewarded with several ‘in’ jokes that took place before that movie. A very young crocodile makes an appearance as does a certain pirate in a red shirt.
For the most part it is the fairy’s movie. It starts out in Pixie Hollow with a rebel fairy named Zarina who is creative and wants to experiment with the magical blue pixie dust. This is the dust that gives the fairies the power to fly and do some other things like control the plants, water, etc.
Zarina messes things up big time in Pixie Hollow and has to go on the run. As all good fairies gone bad do, she returns after a year on the run to steal all of the blue pixie dust. She’s joined the pirates and is helping them get the pixie dust so that they can have a ship that flies. This is the part of the movie where James, the second in command helps our pirate fairy and her crew of dopey, lovable and villainous thieves.
James is voiced by Tom Hiddleston. Hiddleston is awesome in most everything he does. He’s just a notch down from Cumberbatch in that he’s a man’s man. He can sing, dance, he’s funny, charming and good enough to make adults forget that the movie is 65% fairy.
Our 2 year old liked The Pirate Fairy. The 4 year old wanted more pirates and less singing. But they’re both boys. Young girls will love this move, talk about which fairy they like the best, cower just a bit when the pirates get evil and squeal when the fairies save the day.
The Pirate Fairy is enjoyable, solid, staple entertainment from Disney. The blu-ray DVD comes with a digital copy, some extras, sing alongs and more.
