Alpha Cards, He’s All Boy, are ABC flash cards for boys, but could also be enjoyed by girls. They’re a deck of alphabet cards with non-traditional pictures that go with each letter. There are so many things that I love about the product, but ultimately it’s not something that we could embrace. If your child is not learning the alphabet and is attracted to mild gross humor then this is for you. Think the Garbage Pail Kids teach the alphabet and you’re going in the right direction.
Our oldest child just turned 4 and knows his alphabet. I understand that some boys learn quicker when it’s something that they are interested in. As a kid I still remember reading, and not just looking at the art, comic books to help learn new vocabulary. Thanks to Spider Man I knew that QE2 was an abbreviation for Queen Elizabeth 2, the massive cruise ship; still have the issue BTW.
I know that at some point our children will learn ‘poop’, ‘booger’ and other words that we’ll then ask him not to say. They’ll also draw disgusting things, laugh and we’ll roll our eyes when they do that. I know that they will do this.
However, I don’t want those disgusting things to be the basis, entry point or point of interest in him learning something.
I feel like kind of a prude when I write that. But it’s the way that I think and it’s the way that we’re raising our son.
The Alpha Cards from He’s All Boy have a great story, are well made produced in the USA. They’re produced on glossy stock that is very durable and the colors in the cards are quite engaging. Their creator, Susan Levy started the project via Kickstarter, producing great success and the cards are available now.
Levy is an ex teacher who had the idea to engage children who needed alphabet cards more in line with what they think. Not all of the cards are akin to the Garbage Pail Kids gross out humor. About 70% of them have non-traditional letter associations like Naked Ninja or Robot Rocket. Those are simply silly words with cartoon illustrations. In a television interview Levy admitted that the cards wouldn’t align with every parent due to some of the gross out illustrations or words.
Count us among those parents.
Flash cards are a great learning resource. My youngest son loves them.
