A good bedtime story has two ways to look at it: it’s fun for the children to hear and it’s fun for the parents to read. That’s our go-to rule for bedtime stories. If it meets both of those criteria then it’s bound to be something that will last for a long time. On My Way to Bed is the silly, brightly illustrated story about Livi creatively avoiding bedtime.
It starts out with Livi jumping on the sofa insisting that she still has energy and doesn’t need to go o bed. As she goes in the direction of her bedroom she walks in a straight line, which magically transforms into a high wire in the circus.
Brushing her teeth she imagines herself to be a zoo dentist, an astronaut when she sees her sister working on a science project and a mountain climber amongst a sea of pillows. There are lots of things going on in the illustrations by Michael Parakevas; and all of the drawings fill up the entire pages with color or action. The other thing that’s good about the illustrations is that they’re big. If you’re reading a book to two small children they’re not too keen on sharing the book so large pictures are mandatory.
When Livi finally gets to bed she feigns dehydration in a dessert-complete with a pyramid and longhorn skull. The book ends in the morning when she wakes up and imagines herself as a bear, slowly rising to start the day from her sleep cave.
On My Way to Bed is a fast moving, silly story that kids will laugh at and you’ll have fun reading. Because it’s a book that lends itself to a fast upbeat read, it’s the first book we read at night. Afterwards we’ll read a slower, more sedate book to get them in the mood to sleep.
We received a copy of the book from the publisher for review purposes. All thoughts are our own. Reading is cool.
