Father’s Day is just around the corner. Because I’m Your Dad is not exclusively a Father’s Day book per se, but it is about a dad’s bond with his child, or in this case his monster.
The dad in the book green horned monster that cares for his purple horned son. He’s a loving dad who is just a bit goofy, giving him an unusual first name, eating spaghetti for breakfast and a bathtub full of rocky road ice cream.
The illustrations in the book are large, soft and very whimsical. The dialogue is playful, big font and to the point, just perfect for a children’s bed time book.
We shared the book with an 8 year old who loves to read and asked her to share some thoughts about the book.
She immediately noticed the little details in the pictures like the thumb puppets in the bedroom. “It’s kind of silly with the bath tub of rocky road ice cream because you’re supposed to be clean, but he’s not,” she also said. Our young reader liked the title because it tells you what’s going to happen.
She also liked that it had a loving tone, instead of instructing. Had the book been, clean the room ‘because I’m your dad’, she would not have liked it. “I like his (the monster dad’s) face in the book because it’s kind of crazy, kind of goofy and he only has one tooth, while his dad has 4”, she concluded our little chat with.
The book is written by Ahmet Zappa and illustrated by San Santat. The surname of the author may explain why some of the panels show dad doing non-traditional things. Sure it’s a children’s book, but Frank Zappa’s music and creativity were off the charts. The last page is touching because it breaks it all down to, at the end of the day, he’s a dad and he’ll do what needs to be done. That could be ticking, scaring monsters out of the closet or introducing them to New York hot dogs.
