Spring is here! Well, it’s officially here in a couple of weeks, temperature wise it’s here now and according to the trade shows it’s been going on for a while. For homeowners and DIY type folks the Atlanta Home Show is one of the seasons must attend events and is happening Friday March 22 to Sunday the 24th.
We try to go to this show every year and are excited because we’ve actually got projects in mind, rather than dire needs or emergencies. In the near future we’ll need a roof, maybe some widows and definitely some soffit work. We may also need some HVAC work and tree removal, oh the fun of home ownership.
But home ownership IS fun and repairs don’t need to be stressful. These repairs are ones that are being done before it’s an emergency. Whatever category you’re in, attending your local home show can be beneficial in getting those home repairs done.
Do not fear the salespeople
Yes, trade shows are ultimately designed to introduce businesses to consumers. Ideally at some point a sale will take place, money will be exchanged and repairs will be done.
As a consumer you have more power at a trade show than having them come out to your house. Sure the sales (or PR people) will send a technician out to your house to provide an estimate and that could be a bit intimidating. Not knowing the true cost or terminology of repairs, even (or especially) on your home turf can be difficult.
When you meet the sales or PR people at the trade shows be certain to get their business cards. If you have any questions about the service or pricing when the do the estimate call them and they’ll assist you.
You meet LOTS of contractors
Be patient and DO NOT fill out any of the contest vouchers if you don’t want to be contacted by a sales person. Having said that, there are lots of prizes that you can win at most home shows, which is one reason why we also attend.
Take business cards
You can put them in the fishbowl for all of the contests, saving time on vendors that you don’t want to talk to; but want to win their stuff.
Highlights of The Atlanta Home Show are a talk/appearance by Jeff Devlin of the DIY Network, a 3,000 square foot see through house and more. IKEA is giving away a $25,000 dream kitchen, there’s a backyard beer garden and an exhibit geared toward facilitating aging people in our homes.
But back to the backyard beer garden, it raises money for a great charity, teaches you about backyard idea and has local craft beer.
There is also a $2 off coupon that you can use. The event is kid friendly and they’ll love going to some of the exhibits.
We were provided with a pair of tickets to The Atlanta Home Show, but were going to attend either way. All thoughts are our own.
