Moving Christmas is one of those clever Christmas stories that you immediately enjoy. The illustrations by Max Miceli are fun, bright, goofy and vivid. The pictures have so much movement and action it looks like they’re screenshots from a movie or app. Moving Christmas is an app, but it’s also a book.
The story starts out with a small crack in the ice near the North Pole. The crack grows until it splits open the land beneath Santa’s workshop, just weeks before Christmas. With Santa’s workshop destroyed he sets about the goal of moving the operation to the South Pole.
Mrs. Claus asks who could possible move all of their seemingly impossible stuff that far. Santa tells everyone that someone who’s been on the Nice List, Frank Duffy, Mover of the Impossible. Frank has moved beached whales and other super difficult things to places where they needed to be.
The elves go meet Frank, who through some very gentle encouraging helps pack up Santa’s operation for a grand move to the South Pole. Along the way they encounter lots of trouble, see some old friends and discover what’s really important when starting to do anything.
I just gave the book to Mommy Mojo to read and she gave several big laughs. She liked that Frank and Santa encountered numerous large challenges along their journey, but that they kept on trying. Never give up, keep trying, have faith and believe that it is possible. All of those are big themes in the book and it’s a great message for kids or adults to read or be reminded of.
We both liked the illustrations in Moving Christmas too, they’re fun, active and easy to follow for kids of all ages. There are shades of eco conservation in the book (global warming destroyed the North Pole and solar toys that ended up saving the day), but it’s not preachy. The ending of the book also sets up a sequel where Duffy Moving helps Area 51.
Moving Christmas is a great book for kids 5 and up to read. It might be just a bit too long (for some parents) to read to younger kids as a good-night book. Having said that, you might have so much fun reading it and looking at the pictures that you’ll put them to bed just a bit later than usual. Moving Christmas is written by Brandon Camp and Richard D’Ovidio. The app is supposedly very interactive with lots of ‘prizes’ that can be found in the pages. You can get the book as an app on your iDevices, Android, Nook or as a regular ‘Book’, fancy that.
We were provided with a physical copy of Moving Christmas for review purposes. All thoughts are our own.
