For the record I don’t want to die, nor do I currently have a life threatening illness. However, from the lifetime (pardon the pun) of special events that I’ve planned and attended I know that our final special event may be lacking something.
A couple of years ago I attended a funeral and the night before we were sitting around planning the wake. Someone said, ‘what kind of music should we play’? The person who passed loved music; but in the end we weren’t sure about the rules and decorum for a wake so we didn’t bother with it. For the record I’m giving my family permission to have a pet friendly wake, with music, as long as they play these songs-in addition to any others they deem appropriate.
The Feeling-Fill My Little World
Even in the afterlife I’ll be tapping my toes to this song. It’s ridiculously catchy.
Stereophonics-Have a Nice Day
It’s a great song, but a horrible video. I’ll come back to haunt the wake if they show the video, really.
Yann Tiersen-Amelie
They could play this entire soundtrack and I’d be OK with that.
The Cure-Disintegration
Ditto Disintegration. Go ahead and play the entire release.
The Association-Windy
This song was with me all throughout my life. It’s fun, short, great for karaoke and awesome.
Astrud Gilberto-The Girl From Ipanema
I heard this when I was washing dishes at the oyster restaurant in Nottingham, played it when I was a strip club DJ and still love the song.
The Byrds-I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better
One of the best bands from the 60’s, they could have a couple songs played during my wake and I’d be good with that.
Crowded House-Weather With You
Why this group never made it big in the US is a testament to how bad radio is. They’re a great group with a fabulous song.
Europe-The Final Countdown
It’s a great, earnestly enjoyable song and has a secondary message from the title.
There are lots of songs and artists that I know I didn’t include, but I hope to do another list in a year or so. I’m taking my vitamins and knocking on wood as I type this too BTW.
What songs do you want played at your wake?
Mansions of the Lord comes to mind, but since I wasn’t in the service I don’t know if it is appropriate. Probably include Ghost Riders in The Sky, Ring of Fire, and some others that haven’t come to mind yet.
