Hallmark produces safe, family friendly movies. You’ve Got a Friend is one of those movies that was originally shown on television in 2007. It’s being released on DVD this week and if you want to win a copy of this very safe for the family movie keep on reading.
You’ve Got a Friend stars John Schneider as the mysterious loner in town. He used to be a champion soap box derby racer. A young boy moves down the street to live with his aunt and uncle. The boy, has no hobbies, but then starts to take an interest in soap box cars and asks Schneider for his help.
The movie takes place in 1976 and had more than a few technical errors with gadgets and appliances that didn’t exist back then. Adults will also be able to predict what’s going to happen from the moment the young boy goes over to the neighbor’s house. There’s also a bully in the neighborhood that has a dad that’s too demanding of him. The bully races soap box cars too, guess what the final scene in the movie is?
Having said that….this is a movie for kids and boys 9 and under will like the soap box derby elements. There are also some good lessons about standing up for yourself and not judging other people based on rumors or appearances. Adults can put the movie in and be confident that nothing offensive will be shown and that the kids will moderately enjoy the movie.
Bottom line: Adults will not like this movie as it’s far too slow and predictable. Kids will like it because it’s 98 minutes of relaxation time without mom or dad asking them to do something. That and even The Boy in The Bubble doesn’t look so bad in hindsight, does it?
