There are countless ways that The Avengers could have been messed up. It’s the stuff of legendary internet memes, with Lego characters making a bad version of the movie. The casting could’ve been bad-the script could’ve focused too much on one character or ignored others. Thankfully The Avengers nails it to the floor and is one of most entertaining movies you’ll see this year.
Director Joss Whedon knows the source material for The Avengers so well. When they were making Lord of the Rings, director Peter Jackson was being interview and his affection and knowledge of the books was evident. In hindsight you couldn’t think of anyone else directing LOTR and the same can be said of Whedon and The Avengers. Whedon gets The Avengers and has a quick, pop culture sense of humor that adds levels of enjoyment to the movie.
I expected superheroes in The Avengers. What was surprising was how genuinely funny the movie was. The verbal jokes are quick and the physical humor is all Hulk. Remember that scene in Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom where Indy is faced with a fancy swordsman? Instead of playing around, Indy just shoots him and the crowd goes wild! Hulk has two scenes that are similar to that, which made the audience laugh out loud and clap.
I have never seen a movie where people clapped during the movie, multiple times. I didn’t count the number of times it happened in The Avengers, but it happened a lot.
All of the characters get their share of screen time and the action never stops. What’s possibly more impressing is that I attended the movie with a person who had never seen any of the Marvel movies. They loved The Avengers as much as I (an admitted Fanboy) did. For them they said that the quality of the movie, specifically the digital animation, was the best that they’d ever seen.
The Avengers lives up to the hype. Even the 3D, which I’m not a fan, didn’t get in the way here. It actually added to the enjoyment of the movie. We won’t put any plot spoilers here, just relax and go see it.
