I’m a news junkie in the body of a stay-at-home-dad. The story of Hilary Rosen and what she said about stay-at-home-moms not “working a day in their lives” if fascinating on so many levels. It’s a great example of how a story can get blown out of proportion in a very short amount of time.
Here’s a short recap of the story. Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen appears on CNN and states that Ann Romney ‘hasn’t worked a day in her life’. The money shot is at :58. Ms. Rosen then doubled down on her statement Thursday morning. By the afternoon she had released an official apology and was doing a mea culpa on any camera that would point in her direction. Democrats couldn’t bury the story quick enough and Republicans have already made merchandise to remind people about it.
I believe Ms. Rosen when she says that stay-at-home-moms work. While I wish she had used the term ‘parents’, that would be politically correct and I’m not down with that at all. Included stay-at-home-dads in the mix, don’t call us by name and we’ll get along just fine thank you very much.
What’s sad is that this incident will affect how people vote. This one instance of a biased, political pundit will impact how people vote, both on the left and right.
The Democrats think stay-at-home-moms are lazy and don’t work. The Republicans are rich, don’t pay taxes and can afford a maid-they don’t know struggles. Both of these statements are false, but some in the extremes of both may unfortunately think that they’re true. Knuckleheads on the right and left will have impressions based on the stay-at-home-mom debacle that was in the news today.
If a Republican pundit had said something as careless as what Rosen said then the Democrats would be doing the same thing.
One issue or instance should not determine how you vote. A person who votes according to one individual issue is an uninformed person who’s easily led; and that description goes to those on the right and left.
If this issue came to your attention and you don’t follow government or policy then welcome to the political party! Study about what you like, why you like it and don’t just vote according to what you think you should for one reason or the other.
I too am a news junkie, and am a stay at home mom (parent, you are right!). I don’t think this is going to effect how anyone votes, but I do think it’s great for both sides to get distracted with nonsense rather than deal with the issues that effect both stay-at-home mom’s and at-work mom’s. Both men and women have to ask themselves which candidate supports policies that really help both sexes, not just pay lip service to the importance of their ability to make choices in their own lives. Great to find your site on Twitter, I’m now happily following.
Why thank you! We grin and have reciprocated. It’s hoped that nonsense from both parties won’t sway voters and I would LOVE to hear more intelligent questions from the press. Mojo your way!
Unfortunately, there are too many people in this country who can be persuaded by shiny lights and political rhetoric instead of what is really important.
Look a shiny light, what are those Kardashian sisters up to? Truth.
If a Republican said ANYTHING resembling what the foolish Ms. Rosen said, we’d NEVER hear the end of it in ALL MSM – on Bill Maher, that idiot on MSNBC, the NY Times, and every college campus. There is such a double standard. I love how FAST David Axelrod disavowed the White House connection to Ms. Rosen. She was dumped under the bus the way this administration does to anyone/everyone that doesn’t fit their needs OF the moment!
I would agree with you. My hot button lately is people that are 1 issue voters, be it for any reason. Thus the thrust of the post.
Saying a Liberal who said a dumb thing on TV doesn’t represent the views of the White House is not throwing her under a bus. She has no connection to the White House. Of course they had to come up with a statement disavowing the SAHM comment, because they didn’t want independents to think this was a Democratic opinion. There’s no conspiracy here. Someone said a dumb thing. The End.
I don’t believe there’s a conspiracy here either but I do believe there’s a double standard when DUMB things are said…when said by someone on the right, they either lose their job and/or go through a gauntlet of media hell. When said on the left, they rarely even apologize and it gets minimal coverage. THAT is the truth!
I would certainly agree that there is a double standard. In opinion shows it’s to be expected. It’s disappointing when you see it in the news coverage by the stories they cover or the amount of time the do (or don’t) spend on it.
What double standard? When people who are connected in any way to political parties say dumb things, like in this case, the party is quick to say these people don’t speak for them. What’s the double standard here? I don’t know what example you want to give on the right. Glenn Beck who called a Holocaust survivor a Nazi sympathizer and then lost his job?
Apologies do come from strategies on the left and the right come when they realize they’re hurting their cause, like in this case. It’s the same for both parties.”They rarely even apologize and it gets minimal coverage” — so why is this relevant here, when she apologized and it’s been at the top of the news for a week? And as usual, saying, “THAT is the truth,” doesn’t make it so. EVEN when you use capital letters.
This is yet another reason why I don’t follow the news.
And why I break it out into short nuggets. Love your posts lately. NYC was good for the rhythm yes?
Thanks man. NYC was a good time. Great opportunity.
The 24 hour news cycle has done wonders for the news. 😉
