Growing up I was very much into the WWF. I’m old enough to grow up when it was still the WWF and not the WWE. Now I would never confuse one of the highest spectacles of sports entertainment with an animal wildlife organization. As a mature fan of the WWE I can still embrace the sport and remember the entertainers that paved the way for the young stars today.
So when I was asked to take a look at two figures in the WWE Defining Moments Figure Assortment I did so with a sly grin. In my mind I was secretly thinking, ‘how can I play with them, yet keep them in the box to maintain their mint condition’? It was that classic vintage toy episode from Seinfeld all over again, except nobody got drugged and fell asleep on the sofa.
After looking at the packaging for a couple weeks I realized that I had to play with them. Rather than open them softly, I took a knife and sliced the packages wide open; sparing Macho Man Randy Savage and Shawn Michaels from being entombed in their mint condition box for all eternity.
I grew up watching Macho Man Randy Savage wrestle. He and The Ultimate Warrior were always my favorite wrestlers for different reasons. Macho Man commanded the ring with his personality. His relationship with Miss Elizabeth only completed the soap opera relationship and made it more real. Thus, I played with the Macho Man figure first.
The first thing you notice about these figures is how many poses you can put them in. Their legs can move from the hip, below and above the knee and their feet can move up and down, as well as, side to side. The head can move up and down, while their torso can go back and forth like the figure is doing sit ups or giving someone a knee drop. The arms full flex, shoulder can move and the hands can rotate around. As a bonus one hand comes in a gripping motion, so they can pick up things like foreign objects to beat down their opponent.
I invited a group of 8 year old neighborhood kids to play with the figures. They noticed the same things about them: they were very flexible and realistic. Most of the group liked Macho Man better than Shawn Michaels. I asked them why they like that one more, they told me ‘you can take off his glasses’. Talk about detail, you can take off the hat, glasses, shirt and jacket for both action figures to have a full on battle royale.
My test group of subjects liked playing with the figures very much and didn’t want me to take them back home. My test group didn’t know the history of either wrestler, but I gave them a quick history of Macho Man breaking up with Miss Elizabeth and Shawn Michaels career ending match with The Undertaker in WrestleMania XXVI. I knew that information already.
If you didn’t know that information already all you needed to do was look at the box (unless you cut it open with a knife..). On the back you’ll read an account of what exactly made each respective entertainer a legend in the sport. Shawn Michaels is the personification of hard work, determination and took his undefeated record head to a retirement match in WrestleMania XXVI. Macho Man’s act was large and in charge, whether he was with Miss Elizabeth or Queen Sherri, he was a tireless performer who will be missed.
The Bottomline
If you’re a collector and getting these figures to remain in the box it’ll be tough not to free them from their steel cage match of cardboard and plastic. If you’re getting these figures for young fans that will use them to play with in the backyard they’ll have a blast. These are high quality action figures with lots of detail that will keep kids (of all ages 😉 ) entertained for a long time.

Ohhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaaah! Randy Savage was always the (macho) man. His recent passing was a shock, but only partly because I didnt realize he was still alive. He looked like a changed man in recent pics.
When my parents moved from my childhood home a couple years ago, I retrieved a slew of my original WWF action figures, for my son of course. These are the dense rubbery ones from the late 80s. They are still in great condition: George Steele’s tongue is still green, The Macho Man’s shades are still intact. I haven’t given them to my little guy yet, but soon…
Thanks for the flashback!
Hmmmm, we’re kind of jealous of your vintage figures.
Bump the kids I’ve got a special place on my desk waiting for Macho Man ha. Like JJ I couldn’t believe it when he passed earlier this year. I also had some of those super rubber figures back in the day and wish I still had them. I know I had the Hulkster but can’t remember who else. I was definitely a Hulkamaniac back in the day LOL.
I’d love one of those for my husband. He’s a huge wrestling fan. We loved watching DX do their skits on WWE.
