Both mom and I have been reading to Baby Mojo since he could open his eyes. It started out with Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Ten Little Ladybugs and an assortment of other hardback books. We have many more non hardback books, but quickly discovered that he would either eat them or destroy the pages.
Look at the smart mom and dad who only have hardback books so their baby can’t destroy them. That is, until the baby starts to get about five teeth and the only thing separating that child from a beaver is the lack of a paddle tail. Our child can chew through the corner of a hardback book like nobody’s business.
At the library we purchased a used copy of Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton. He laughed himself silly in the library when I was reading the book, so purchasing it was a no brainer. I left the book in his lap for the drive home and by the time we had gotten home he had chewed through the upper left corner ¼ inch.
This led me to do what libraries do to safeguard their books from young toddlers, as well as, beavers.
We’ve now put clear packing tape over the binding and going out 2 inches beyond that. This has cut out all teething from Baby Mojo, as well as, his yearning to act like a beaver, at least with books.
Guys- don’t use duct tape. I was tempted to at first too, but thought better of it, lest my wife want anybody other than us to see the books. Clear tape will do the trick and safeguard your budding child library for future use by more children or grand children.
