Car and computer problems. Both of them stop our day’s cold in their tracks and piss us off royally. Why today? It may not be a good day for either of them; but the day that it happens-when you’re not expecting seems like the worst day for it ever. Then something major happens and you wish for car or computer problems. A friend to the blogging community is going through something like that, stage 4 Cancer, here’s his story and how you can help.
Oren Miller is the creator of A Blogger and a Father. He’s also the one who wrangled together the big Facebook group of dad bloggers that your parents warned you about. Wait, we’re the parents….OK that was just a cliché from your teen years. Regardless, it’s a place where dads with blogs talk, share posts and write fart jokes, which aren’t nearly as funny or aromatic as the real thing.
Stage 4 Cancer is serious stuff. Oren is dealing with it the best way that he knows how. He wrote an amazing post about his diagnosis and what his family means to him. In that post he details how there is something amazing, graceful and beautiful to take away from any moment in life.
It’s OK to ask for help is one takeaway. Our church has a meal calendar for new parents. That is a great idea because new parents don’t know enough to know that they need help cooking.
The internet can cause slacktivisim or the bystander effect. You don’t do anything because you assume that if you like, click or share that’s doing what’s good enough. In reality that is good enough only for your conscience.
One of the dad bloggers in the group created a GiveForwardCampaign for Oren’s family. It exceeded its initial goals and is growing every day. It’s not important how much one gives; rather that you give. I learned that from my time in non-profit fundraising. It is better to have 100 people donate $10 than one person donate $1,000.
If you know Oren, his blog A Blogger and a Father or have experienced someone with Stage 4 Cancer this is an opportunity to get off the sidelines and help a great guy-with a great family who can use a hand.
